Orchestra I

Prerequisite: None

Orchestra I is designed for first-time music students who are new to string instruments. This class may also be suitable for those with some experience already who may need review or reinforcement. In Orchestra I, students can choose to learn the violin, viola, cello, or bass. During the course of the year, fundamentals including proper playing posture, quality tone production, and music literacy are the main focus. Students will have learned all of the necessary techniques and skills by the end of the school year and will be ready for Orchestra II. Students are required to provide their own instruments, though a limited number of cellos and basses are available for use on campus.

Orchestra II

Prerequisite: Orch I or by instructor approval

Orchestra II offers opportunities for intermediate-level performers to further increase ensemble skills and individual precision on their orchestral instruments. This course is recommended for those who already have an understanding of basic music reading, instrument assembly and maintenance, correct playing position, and sound tone production. Students in this orchestra will learn more in-depth techniques including refinement of tone quality, 3rd position, bow techniques, new keys, complex rhythms, and vibrato. Students are required to provide their own instruments, though a limited number of cellos and basses are available for use on campus

JD String Orchestra

Prerequisite: recommended 2-3 years of previous experience

This course is designed as a continuation for students with previous orchestral experience. Emphasis is placed on advancement of instrumental technique, music reading and comprehension skills, and performing in an ensemble. Students in the course are encouraged to prepare for festivals and other competitions and thus are provided solo and small ensemble project opportunities. The orchestra is a contributor to the Juan Diego community and performs for school and community-related events both during the day and in the evening.

Chamber Orchestra/Rock Orchestra

Prerequisite: Audition and instructor approval

Chamber Orchestra is the elite level orchestra and offers students great variety and challenge in musical performance. It is recommended that students have at least 2-3 years experience before auditioning or be familiar with 3rd - 5th positions, keys in 3 sharps and 3 flats, and be able to create a beautiful tone with vibrato. In this orchestra, students learn both traditional chamber pieces on traditional instruments as well as well-known rock classics utilizing electric violins and pedals. Music from composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky and modern artists like Coldplay, U2, Greenday, Led Zeppelin, and Muse will be performed. Chamber Orchestra is a contributor to the Juan Diego community and performs for school and community-related events both during the day and in the evening. This class meets in the morning during 0 period two days each week
