Orchestra I is designed for first-time music students who are new to string instruments. This class may also be suitable for those with some experience already who may need review or reinforcement. In Orchestra I, students can choose to learn the violin, viola, cello, or bass. During the course of the year, fundamentals including proper playing posture, quality tone production, and music literacy are the main focus. Students will have learned all of the necessary techniques and skills by the end of the school year and will be ready for Orchestra II. Students are required to provide their own instruments, though a limited number of cellos and basses are available for use on campus.
Prerequisite: Orch I or by instructor approval
Orchestra II offers opportunities for intermediate-level performers to further increase ensemble skills and individual precision on their orchestral instruments. This course is recommended for those who already have an understanding of basic music reading, instrument assembly and maintenance, correct playing position, and sound tone production. Students in this orchestra will learn more in-depth techniques including refinement of tone quality, 3rd position, bow techniques, new keys, complex rhythms, and vibrato. Students are required to provide their own instruments, though a limited number of cellos and basses are available for use on campus
